Running time: 31 minutes (DSL required) About the film - Short description Houdini - The EX best friend The story is about animals, dogs - mongrels who have no market value in a human made world, and about people who are extremely brutal those those animals. Dog pounds and some dog shelters - asylums in Croatia are places of brutality and torture, where they steal the money given for the animals by the Government. They take the money for food, medical treatment and euthansia in their pockets and kill the animals by hanging them on the wire or even more brutal .... charging the government for all treatments. In time we encountered a few people who help ease the suffering of these unfortunate animals .... all of them were volunteers.
Abandoned dogs in a dog pound
The pound's capacity is 20 cages, each not bigger than 1 square meter. The cages are made of steal, with a steal bottom without holes, and they are washed with gushes of cold water, while the dogs are inside them. The dogs lie in their cages in pools of cold water, urine and feces. Although they hardly move at all, they are skinny due to poor nourishment.
The law about the welfare of animals demands that abandoned dogs are put down after 30 days spent in the pound. Over the past 7 years, the volontary organisaion Druga Prilika (Second Chance) has saved 2.472 dogs and puppies from the pound, by finding them new owners through the media, or taking over the care for the ones that could not be addopted (due to undernourishment, wounded/crippled bodies or antisocial behaviour). Such dogs were being taken from the shelter on their 29th day, and their needs were financed by donators. The Second Chance organisation has never left a single dog to be put down at the pound.
The dogs at the pound are being subjected to experiments. .
The dog catchers
This is a video of Zagreb dog pound's dog catchers in action. Apart from brutality, it also displays how many abandoned or lost dogs never make it to the pound, because they end up being strangled to death during the process of catching.
Many of those who survive being caught with a wire around their neck remain traumatised forever, and they panic and resist ever getting a collar put on them again. Some of them (those with shorter fur) have a round bloody wound around their neck, where the skin cracked due to the strong grasp of the wire.
The law about the welfare of animals (article 26.2, NN No 19, 1999.) demands that lost animals are caught in such way that «the animals suffer as least pain and suffering as possible». There is no punishment predicted for the violation of that rule.
The dog from this footage never made it to the pound.
ZAGREBAČKI AZIL ZA NAPUŠTENE PSE u Dumovcu
Dio snimke HTV-a.
???????
Azil još uvijek nema vodovoda i kanalizacije.
The city dog refuge in Dumovac
The dog refuge in Dumovac was started near the end of year 2000, without a licence, which it still does not have. The building where it is situated is a badly adapted ex-cattle farm. It is 500 meters away from the crematorium in Sesvetski Kraljevac, and about 30 km outside the city, so hardly any potential adopters are visiting it. The capacity of the refuge is 150 dogs, which is intolerably little considering the amount of stray dogs in Zagreb, and in comparison to Europeian standards. (there is one slot in the refuge per 800 people, therefore Zagreb should have a refuge with 1200 slots).
When people want to place a stray dog into the refuge, the answer they always get is that the refuge is full, and can not accept any more dogs. The dogs from the refuge are almost never given for addoption. But they do die of illness, or their numbers are reduced in ways captured on this footage.
During the first 6 months of the Dumovac refuge activity, the refuge guards have noted 93 dog deaths. Most of those deaths were filed as «night damage», whatever that means! Since then, the guards in the refuge can keep no track of actions and causes of death of dogs in their refuge. They are misinforming the city authorities by tellng the media that the dogs in the Dumovac refuge are living like in a 4 star hotel!
